May 2026 Activity Report

17 May (Sunday) – MelJoy

Despite the rain, 13 people joined us for our MelJoy outing.

Keeping an eye on the weather, we set off from Flinders Street Station and walked along the Yarra River to Charles Grimes Bridge before returning to Flinders Street Station.

We then enjoyed a pub lunch and a lovely chat at The Clocks.

One of our participants, who used to work as a tour guide, shared interesting information about the sights along the way. It turned out to be a wonderful day of learning, exercise, good food and conversation — we enjoyed all four!

17 May (Sunday) – Taiko Session

Although some participants were unable to attend due to other commitments, and some family members were away with colds, we had a small group this time. Despite the smaller number, it was a very productive and rewarding session.

We also started developing ideas for ANE’s concert in November. With new ideas and challenges to work on, we had such an energetic practice that we were working up quite a sweat!

24 May (Sunday) – ANE at the Japan Festival

We started early in the morning, unloading equipment and setting up our stall. We also managed to assemble ANE’s newly designed banner, which had been prepared just in time for the festival.
As soon as the doors opened, many people visited our stall. We were so busy throughout the day that we did not even have time to take photos!
Thank you very much to everyone who stopped by and supported us. We truly appreciate your visit.

31 May (Sunday) – New Aged Care System Information Session & GenkiFuture Workshop

Thanks to the strong interest from the community, this event was a great success.
The program began with an overview of Australia’s aged care reforms, including key changes and important points to be aware of. This was followed by a valuable presentation from a participant who shared their personal experience of registering with My Aged Care.
Participants then learned about swallowing health and took part in swallowing exercises. After preparing for a safe and enjoyable meal, everyone enjoyed a delicious lunch featuring a variety of homemade dishes and desserts prepared by ANE committee members.
In the afternoon, participants joined the GenkiFuture workshop, an initiative led by Deakin University that explores ways to support older adults through food and technology.
The workshop introduced innovative projects currently being developed in Australia, including VR programs and future food technologies using 3D printing. Presenters from Japan, who are collaborating on the GenkiFuture project, also shared their work. Participants had the opportunity to sample specially developed tofu designed for people with swallowing difficulties, view traditional lacquerware that has been specially processed to reduce spills, and learn about social robots designed to support older adults.
The Consul-General also attended the workshop and showed great interest in the latest research and innovations being presented.
On 2 June, ANE representatives attended a discussion forum at Deakin University, where researchers, community members, and stakeholders engaged in lively discussions about the themes and research being explored through the GenkiFuture project.
